Behavioral Intervention Unit (BIU)
The Hurst Police Department takes a proactive approach to improving the quality of life for citizens. By partnering with Euless and Bedford under one unit called the BIU, or The Behavioral Intervention Unit , Hurst can respond to mental health calls of citizens in crisis with a Licensed Clinician and a Mental Health Peace Officer working as a team. With this approach we can deescalate crisis situations in all three cities, as well as proactive post hospitalization follow ups, and coordinating services for the homeless. This program has been a proven method in the last 10 years to proactively respond and divert citizens with mental health issues, from the criminal justice system, back into treatment services when appropriate.
