Hurst Library Children's Department

Hurst Library's Youth Services Team maintains a wide variety of materials and programs for children from birth through high school and their parents to promote a love for books, learning, literacy, and just plain fun.

Reading programs are available year-round to encourage a healthy diet of books. Below are our currently active reading programs for children:

1000 Books Before Kindergarten Program

For all children under kindergarten age and their caregivers

Who: You and your pre-kindergarten child
What: Read books, any books to your child
When: Whenever you can
Where: Wherever you are
Why: To provide a simple, innovative yet fun approach to establishing strong early literacy skills in young children

The Goal: Read 1,000 books before kindergarten

Help your child gain the confidence necessary to become a strong reader. It's easier than you think and very manageable! When you register, we will show you various ways you can keep track of what you read; you can choose the best for you. And for every 100 books you and your child share, you will get incentives to encourage you along the way.

Read a bedtime story last night? Log in to enter the book title and author (and a review if you like)... keep going like that and your on track to reach 1000!
