Reasons to Read to Toddlers
Studies show that kids with active exposure to language have social and educational advantages over their peers — and reading is one of the best exposures to language.
Reading to toddlers sets the foundation for later independent reading. Reading problems can be challenging to fix when discovered in elementary school, but most reading problems can be prevented if exposure to reading starts in the toddler and preschool years. Before children can read independently, they need emergent literacy skills. These include: having a large vocabulary of words and knowing how to use them, understanding that words are made up of smaller sounds (called phonemic awareness), understanding that marks on a page represent letters and words, and knowing the letters of the alphabet.
You don't need games, flashcards, or special instruction for a toddler gain these skills. Just reading to your child as often as possible is the best way to help him or her learn to read independently. Learning how to appropriately interact with others in a public setting is also an important skill that Toddler Time helps teach! Your child will learn some essential school readiness skills, like how to sit still for an extended period of time, how to pay attention to an adult other than their parents, how to take turns, and how to be (reasonably) quiet in a public place. They also may learn that although at home, it’s totally fine to flip pages in the book, ask to have the same book read over and over, or ask to quit reading one book halfway through and switch to another one, when they are in a group setting, they need to sit still and listen to the book that someone else has chosen. Don't worry though, we provide plenty of opportunities to get up and move as well!
As an added bonus, while you’re at the library, you can choose some books to take home as a “treat” to get excited about!
